Who It’s For

There’s a wall in your house where a fire belongs, but there’s no gas line behind it and no chimney above it, and adding either would turn a weekend into a construction project. You need a fireplace that installs where the fire should go, not where the venting says it can. If you’re finishing a bedroom, a condo living room, or a remodel where the fireplace should read as built into the architecture, the Napoleon Astound FlexMount hangs on the wall, tucks partway in, or recesses fully flush—and shows the fire from one, two, or three sides. Pick a standard flat-front unit instead and the fire disappears the moment you step out of line with it.

What Makes It Special

Most linear electric fireplaces are a panel with a single view. This one ships with finishing panels and trim for one-, two-, or three-sided installation, so a peninsula wall or a room divider shows fire from every seat—and the same unit still works if the room changes in five years.

The fire itself earns the wall space. Flames run orange, yellow, or both, with rising ember effects that move like a real wood fire, over the driftwood-style log set and media kit that come in the box. The included remote runs everything—thermostat, 7-day schedule, flame, and 13 ember bed and top light colors—and the Napoleon Home app and Google Home or Alexa add more combinations and voice control.

For heat, set the thermostat and it holds the room there on its own. ECO mode runs at half heat for the evenings when the flames are the point; BOOST runs the heater flat out with a faster fan for a cold morning. Hardwired on a 240-volt line, it delivers twice the heat of the standard plug-in setup.

Possible Downsides

• The full heat output requires 240-volt hardwiring by an electrician; on a standard outlet it runs at half that.
• It warms the room it’s in, not the house; if you want a primary heat source, look at a gas or wood unit.
• Mineral rock and black crystal media are optional add-ons, not included in the box.
